The Church of Gethsemane collaborates with the Presbytery of New York City’s Council on Witness In Society and The World, JusticeWorks Community, and with faith communities and organizations throughout New York City to provide educational programs and forums and to advocate for changes in our present criminal justice system. We invite other churches and neighborhood residents to join in our ministry. Many volunteer their time and services, and help support our programs through contributions. The Church of Gethsemane has been a persistent voice in the fight against unjust laws, especially the death penalty and unfair sentences.
The Church of Gethsemane was the first church to become involved in this national campaign to bring awareness on Mother's Day to the many women in prisons and jails throughout our country who have children and the effects of incarceration on their lives. We have a special Mother's In Prison, Children in Crisis Mother's Day Service at our church. We also hand out origami flowers to all who attend the service and to people who walk by our church from the neighborhood. We want to remind people to think about mothers who are in prison on Mother's Day and their children.
